Yolanda Gales finds success in Shreveport, a mother’s dream comes to life through her daughterMarch 16, 2017
Founded in a small-town school event in California, Women’s History month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, society, and culture. By 1987, the United States Congress declared March as Women’s History Month. A special Presidential Proclamation is issued every year in honor of the extraordinary achievements of women across America, as they strived for societal recognition as well as making their home country just a little bit better.
Yolanda Giselle Gales is one of these women.
Native to New Orleans, Louisiana, Gales moved to Shreveport in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina. In 2009, she opened her Benote Hair Salon and became one of the top names of natural hair salons in the state of Louisiana.
“It wasn’t my first decision to open a salon,” says Gales. “At first, it was my mom’s initial dream to open a salon and I was just kind of pushed into it. It’s hard work, but I enjoy it. I’ve been able to grow as a person and I love being able to meet different people who come in every day.”
Recognized for her outstanding work with natural hair styles, Gales was nominated for a position as a captain of the Professional Beauty Association (PBA), an organization in which African American hair stylists strive to receive recognition for their hard work and dedication.
“Basically, what we do is we advocate for beauty industries in the state of Louisiana,” says Gales. “I don’t think I got the position as captain. I would have gotten a call by now if I did. But I’m proud to have been nominated for the position.”
Gales continues to successfully manage Benote Hair Salon in Shreveport, bringing in over 400 customers. Being one of many female advocates of Shreveport, her story may inspire other women and young girls to aspire to strive to accomplish anything if they are willing to put in the work.
