Drew Brees makes surprise appearance at Jimmy John’s restaurant in Covington, LAMay 16, 2017
Residents and members of the WhoDat Nation in Covington, LA was probably wondering why traffic on I-12 was backed up for a while on Tuesday, May 16. Maybe it’s because the word spread real quick that Drew Brees was at a local Jimmy John’s restaurant in the growing community on the New Orleans Northshore.
Brees, who has a stake in the Jimmy John’s company, often visits a few of the restaurants. While New Orleans radio station, WWL, broadcast their popular Afternoon Sports Show with Bobby Hebert (known as Godfather of the WhoDat Nation), Brees was there to broadcast with them but also to meet fans.
A line stretched around the Jimmy John’s franchise as Brees shook hands, hugged babies, and took pictures with each and every person who came to the Jimmy John’s restaurant.
“My whole family loves the Saints,” said Charyell Coleman of Hammond, LA. “I think Drew being over here today is great! People on this side of the water rarely get the same opportunities to meet our players as they do in New Orleans,” said Coleman. “He was very personal and friendly. He is extremely polite. Now that I have met him in person I like him even more now. I am ready for the season to start now,” she said with enthusiasm. “I even got a hug from him!”
Coleman says her daughters are die hard Saints fans but it’s her sister who is going to be highly upset. “She had to work and when she finds out I met Drew and got a picture and got an autograph and got a hug… baby she is going to be mad!”
Matt Jensen, Area Manager for Jimmy John’s, says the chain has done extremely well within the New Orleans Metro. “We opened the first one in New Orleans in 2011 and the first one here in Covington opened in 2014. The customer base at all the locations continues to increase each month,” said Jensen.
Sharisse Foster and her kids saw the line and a cousin told her what was going on. “My son is a big Drew Brees fan! When we heard he was over here I knew I had to bring the kids to meet him. He was very nice and kind,” said Foster. Her son Kyeron, 7, and her daughter Mariah, 17, were both waiting impatiently in the line to meet the star of the Saints Superbowl 44 team.
“We’re glad Drew came over to meet our customers and help us build this side of the lake. He can’t do many of these live visits during the season but whenever time permits he has been very eager to support the franchises,” said Jensen. Brees was seen at a Jimmy John’s on the New Orleans Westbank a month ago.
