Presenter(s): JauNae Hanger, J.D. and Gwendolyn J. Kelley, Ph.D.
Description: Launched by the Children’s Policy and Law Initiative of Indiana (CPLI) in 2017, the Positive School Discipline Institute (PSDI) is a year-long training initiative that uses state and local resources to help school personnel reform disciplinary practices and promote student academic success. PSDI training topics include positive school discipline strategies, implicit bias, culturally-responsive practices, adolescent development, restorative justice, mental health, and de-escalation. The program also uses a national best-practices model, The Trauma-Informed School, as a guide. Representatives from CPLI and participant schools will discuss the impact of the initiative, and the need for public policy reform to advance positive school discipline in all schools.
